ROBBED !!!! By a “neighbour”.
February 23, 2007
YES! In hindsight I shouldn’t have done what I did letting a stranger in – BUT I stay on the top floor of a supposedly SECURE apartment block!
If a neighbour wants a cup of sugar, do I SLAM the door in their face?
Would you have done ANY differently?
So I was on a conference call around 5pm today on Skype – me at home, a client in china etc. I was focusing pretty hard on the conversation.
I looked at my door, and through the glass, saw someone standing outside, but didn’t think anything of it.
A few seconds later, the person knocked on my door. It was about 5pm and I had got home about an hour ago, and I was thinking of going to gym, so hadn’t locked the gate.
Anyway, I didn’t really think much of it, so picked up my laptop, as I didn’t want to miss the conversation, and with my headset on, opened the door.
This girl was standing outside, and in 5 seconds told me that she was visiting her sister at the end of the passage, and her sister wasn’t home, and could she use the bathroom quick. She looked like any other person – mid 20’s, jeans, tshirt, Indian girl…didn’t really give it a 2nd thought…
I said sure, and went back to the couch to carry on the conversation.
2 minutes later the bathroom door opened, and she asked me if she could use the towel to dry her hands.
Still busy on the conversation I said sure.
Then she stood at my bar, and had an empty bottle of water, and asked if she could fill up her bottle.
I was hardly even focusing on her at this stage, as the conversation was pretty indepth, so just shook my head yes.
And then when she finished, she asked if I had a pen as she wanted to write her sister a note. I waved her to the 2nd bedroom to get a pen.
My conversation ended at about the same time she had finished writing the note, and I asked her a few questions. What is her sisters name etc…
She said thanks and left.
After she left, about 3 minutes later, I suddenly had an uneasy feeling that something wasn’t right
I suddenly remembered that I knew who lived at the end of the passage, and it wasn’t an Indian girl – it was a middle aged white guy. I had seen him a few months ago, but now that I’m thinking about it, I actually saw him earlier this week.
My first thought was where is my phone. I couldn’t see where I left it, so phoned it from my landline and it was on voicemail. At this stage I had the feeling something had gone wrong. I started looking for my wallet and couldn’t find it either.
But I kept saying to myself “you’re being stupid” – your phone and wallet are probably in the other room, or someplace else. Nevertheless, I ran to the top of the stairs, and there was a slip of paper that I assumed she had written on. Except this piece of paper was blank, so if it was the paper she was writing on, she was just pretending.
I ran down the stairs, and at the corner of my block, 2 of the residents were chatting. I asked them if they had seen the girl, and they had about 10 minutes earlier “stroll past down the road”. I said I thought I had just been robbed, and one of them said they thought the girl had acted very suspiciously. The resident had got out at the third floor, and the girl was standing there, and made up some story which didn’t sound convincing.
Anyway, I was barefoot, but thought I’d try find her – I ended up running to the promenade, didn’t spot anyone resembling her, and hobbled home, coz running on a tarred road wasn’t the best thing for my “always in shoes” feet. I now have about 5 massive blisters on each foot – bloody sore!!! I woke up this morning, and CAN’T WALK – my feet are RUINED.
So now I’ve had the cops at my place taking reports, have cancelled my credit cards, and my sim card, and am looking forward to spending tomorrow trying to get a temporary drivers license, as I leave for jhb on Tuesday, and need it to hire a car.
I’m still shocked that it all happened.
My sister spent an hour telling me how stupid I am letting strangers into my place.
And in hindsight, I shouldn’t have let anyone in, and if I did, should have kept a CLOSE watch!
BUT in the situation, if someone looks trusting, it’s easy to let your guard down – WARNING – DON’T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
by the way, my good friend Max is involved in a website called SA Rocks about all the GOOD in South Africa. I guess i’ll go read it before stepping out to remind me…

Eesh Eric, sorry to hear about that man. Don’t be too hard on yourself, I would have done the same. A lesson for us perhaps…

Sorry to hear! It’s pretty sad that we can’t trust our “neighbours”.

Andrew – if i had been running a bit more like you, maybe i won’t have these massive blisters now!!
don’t know what i would have done if i had spotted her – “can i have my wallet back please”? Tackled her!!!!

Hey Eric. Not nice! Was reading yesterday in the news paper about an Israeli couple who bought a pair of orthopedic sandals for a homeless person / beggar. A few months later they were sued by this person because the shoes had caused back problems. They did not defend the law suite (because of the absurdity of it), subsequently lost the case, and now have to pay damages to the tune of more than US$4000.
Which brings me to a quote by Mark Twain: If a cat sits on a hot plate and burns its backside, it will never sit on a hot plate again, but it will also never sit on a cold plate.
So I suppose the moral is to continue helping people where and when you can, but only if it means you are not placing yourself at risk.
Hope you sort out the paperwork.

Hi Eric. Really sorry to hear about this unsettling ordeal. It is important to remember that it could have been far worse eg her accomplices could have stormed in with weapons etc. The main thing is you were unharmed (blisters aside!) Old Chinese saying: never step in the same river twice. I’m sure you won’t step in this river again! Next time it might have been worse. I recommend rescue remedy and camomile tea to calm the nerves!

OH MY GOODNESS how bizarre this is.
1. you are so very lovely – thank you for the mention oh excellent Mr Edelstein

2. WTF!! this is so wild, this woman is prolific – or there are a gang of these girls working the same MO. Was just discussing how the same thing had happened to Kristoph who I share the office with.. he eventually dragged her out feet first after she feigned passing out in his apartment. Damn, the crooked ones can be seriously creative. 3. Ouch! so sorry you’re much broken
4. Trust is a startlingly precious commodity online and offline. Thanks for the lesson, sorry it was an expensive one!

Hi Eric,
I’m working with Max, who told me about your posting. I had the exact same thing happening to me on Wednesday night. Same chick – same story, (sister, toilet, water, note…).
Guess I was lucky – when she asked me for a second glass of water I asked her to leave. She refused! I then tried to push her out, but as soon as I touched her she dropped to the floor pretending to have passed out. So I just pulled her out – must have looked real strange, but at least I still have a cell…
I live in Marais Rd Sea Point – she is obviously doing the rounds here. Two of my neighbors also got taken…
Ciao

Hey E,
I’m sorry to hear about that. It’s just more irritating than anything else. I wouldn’t have let a guy into my house but i probably would have let a girl in, especially if she looked harmless… so i wouldn’t feel too silly about it. I’ll definitely think twice before letting anyone in now, so thanks for the warning.
Ciao,
Jo
PS. I wish you had seen her on the promenade – i’m having mental images of you tackling her

This is such an eye opener E.
How terrible of her to prey on people’s goodwill, but I guess we’re used to this type of violation because in SA.
People often lie to get handouts from us, and I, for one, capitulate time and again!
I’m gonna turn hard and cynical as a result of incidents like this!!
On the flip side… it’s a reflection of social ills like tik abuse that we can all help solve at grassroots levels – but once it gets to “handouts” stage, I think it’s too late.
Sorry for using you comments page as a ranting platform, but this reaaaally makes me angry!!

Hey Eric,
I am also sad to hear that this sort of thing is happening and happened to you.
However I must thank you for being able to still mention SA Rocks in a post of this sort. It shows that at least you have the right outlook about things!
I will be adding you to the SA Rocks supporters list for posting about SA Rocks.
Thanks again!

Hi Eric
Sorry to hear this. A real pity, but this type of smart crime can happen any where. You were just unlucky. Still pretty horrible though
February 24, 2007 at 1:18 pm
Man, sorry to hear about this Eric. It’s a testimony to your good nature though, and believe me – the wheel turns. She will get her upcommance, and hopefully you will be reciprocated for your kindness somewhere along the line.
It’s strange, I had a completely opposite experience (in Jozi) of all places the other day, when my wife and I went shopping at Makro. I sat down on a chair in the garden furniture section and unbeknownst to me my phone slipped out my pocket. Darn.
I didn’t realise it, but 25 min later the store announcer said someone had handed a phone in – I went over and it was mine.
Take courage in the fact that there are good people out there too. Let’s hope you meet more of them.
Oh and walk barefoot more often – it soothes the sole (soul?)

Bloody Indians – you just can’t trust them!
February 26, 2007 at 2:06 am
On Friday afternoon, my credit card company called me to tell me that my credit card has just been denied at a clothes shop in Parow.
I asked them why they weren’t telling the cops.
Why don’t they introduce a system where you have to show ID when you use your credit card. Yes, there is identity theft, but if the tellers looked at the pictures closely, and checked the ID name with the credit card name, HUGE amounts of credit card fraud would be stopped overnight.
I remember when I was in the US, and lent one of the other guys credit cards – the first restaurant didn’t ask for ID, the second DID – I didn’t try use the card again! (it took a lot of talking to get out of them calling the cops!!!)
Lets get INNOVATIVE!

[...] About half way through, Eran suddently got up and walked out. Didn’t say anything, just got up and left the cinema. Okay, his popcorn needed refilling, quick bathroom break (got to get away from this bathroom stuff) [...]

Same girl popped in at us on Saturday and left with my purse! She is very busy in Sea Point… the cops said 5 dockets have been opened up against her. She used our garage card and so we managed to get her car reg number. The cops say that it is a matter of time before they catch her… will believe it when I see it!
I am going to call Cape Talk to ask them to warn people about her.
No good deed goes unpunished, huh!?!?
