The Sunday Times ran a short piece on the SA blog awards yesterday, and my view point on the blog awards was mentioned in the article.

The Sunday times piece can be read at:

i’ll try get a scanned copy of the article posted as well.

The part they quoted me was as follows:

“Eric Edelstein asked on his blog: “Can’t the blog awards find some impartial judges? Get some system of voting which is unbiased or get non- South African bloggers to judge. It seems like an old boys’ blog club at the moment.”

UPDATE:

Amazing how much publicity something can gather.

If the old saying “all publicity is good publicity” is cherished by Seth, then he’s laughing all the way to the bank with all the publicity he’s getting for his blog.

Jon isn’t doing badly either with publicity for his blog awards, appearing on TV this morning…

paid podcasting

March 14, 2007

is anyone in South Africa (or internationally) doing PAID podcasting? not advertising driven, but charging for each podcast?

an idea would be to have your free podcasts, but once a month to sell a premium version – even if it’s R5 or R10, it would be interesting to see whether anyone is prepared to pay for information via podcasts.

And if it hasn’t been done in SA, doing it would make you the FIRST even if you don’t make money…

one harder than blogging

March 12, 2007

as a relatively new blogger, i have to be honest and admit that it’s not always easy to think of interesting things to write about or to write the posts in a way that anyone would find interesting reading.

but after being grilled by the perrors – short for PODCASTING TERRORS (as i’ll affectionately call them from now on), Mike and Dave, i’ve realised that blogging is a cinch compared to podcasting.

with blogging you get to think, write, edit, think, edit some more

when being interviewed on a podcast, you speak

when Vin was interviewed on webmasterradio.fm about a year ago, i remember thinking in the beginning of the interview, he’s taking strain…but after a few minutes he was back to the normal Vin I know – totally confident when speaking on his subject matter.

after the perrors interviewed me tonight on the “controversy” regarding the feedback strategy i tested on Mobile-QandA.com, (i sent out about 40 emails, 10 to bloggers i know, and 30 to unknowns after visiting their sites – about 3 blogged they thought the mails were spam. about 5 tried to copy the strategy!!! (including one of the Perrors)), i’ve got newfound respect for those asking the questions, (as they have questions prepared but the discussion can still go in many directions) BUT ESPECIALLY for those being interviewed live, as the podcasters get to do the editing…

(NOTE TO SELF: need to constantly remember not to take myself too seriously SO recall this still doesn’t come close to being voted SIX worst on a particular singing show last year)

a lot of bloggers including myself use feedburner as a blogging tool. it has some kewl features, including allowing your readers to receive your blog postings by email (for those that don’t use rss readers)

but have you ever tested that feedburner is working properly? i have been using feedburner on one of my blogs for ages, and noticed that the number of subscribers via rss was rising rapidly, and so were the impressions the blog was getting.

SO WHY WASN’T THE NUMBER OF SUBSCRIBERS INCREASING?

there were a handful of visitors that had asked to opted in to receive updates via email.

not a problem – i was sure it was just that blog readers are savvy and don’t want email updates. they either bookmark their favourite blogs or use a rss reader.

SO I TESTED THE FEEDBURNER EMAIL OPT IN.

and it DIDN’T work! I entered in an email address and then the letter confirmation – it told me I entered the wrong characters. 10 times!!! so I tried it on a few of my other blogs, and SAME thing – on a random basis it accepted the letters i entered, but more often than not, it gave me the kind reply that i was entering incorrectly.

Your visitors will probably try once and then GIVE UP.

Have you tested your feedburner email opt in to see that it’s working properly?
