blog rap

March 11, 2007

Rafiq’s blog rap is brilliant and deserves a listen or 10.

Rafiq – if you had redone the you tube video with your blog rap words, i’d have been super impressed.

but still a great effort.

ENT Banquet

October 11, 2006

Last night I attended the ENT banquet at the Arabella Sheraton. The last time (and I think first time) that I went to a function in the Arabella grand hall was the Glendale function which took place in early August.

The Arabella Sheraton’s grand hall is majestic without any work being done to it, but at the Glendale function we had a HUGE table of Merle Rubin’s delicious food (think lots and lots of sushi) in the foyer and the hall had had the magical touch of an interior designer.

Last night, the foyer was empty except for the piano (which we moved into the grand hall as it was used during the Glendale event), and the grand hall hadn’t had the touches added to it.

Nevertheless, it was a fun night – the speeches went over my head as they were all related to ENT, audiology and speech therapy (which is what the conference is focussed on), but the food was good (although my starter and main vegetarian course looked rather similar), and one of the ENT surgeons brought a guitar and played a “spanish type” solo which was brilliant.

One criticism was the DJ who played music that was out of place and had people leaving the dancefloor in droves, and returning every few songs when one finally was dancable.

whales in sea point

October 10, 2006

well, there are some amazing sights in sea point at the moment – whales (well, i think they are, although they could be dolphins) are jumping around in the sea around the sea point area.

i just saw a whale jumping right out the water

i saw whales in hermanus last year and it was an amazing sight – seeing whales in sea point from my apartment – well….

i was contemplating sitting with my camera for the next hour to try capture the scene, but i came to my senses in time.

customer service laugh

October 9, 2006

each month i have an amount which is debited manually.

i received an email this morning saying that i still owed the amount, so i dropped the company a mail to find out why they hadn’t yet debited my account. this is the reply i received back – it’s going to keep me chuckling way into the night:

“Patrick* deals with this – Patrick* is currently sunning himself somewhere – so this has not been done as yet – do not fret, it will be sorted shortly.”

*Names have been changed to protect the tanners!!!

Apprentice 3 Episode 2

October 5, 2006

“I have never told my accountant to go F*** themselves. I have never told my accountant I hope you get F***’ing fired. And I never cursed.”

Wow! What an episode the 2nd one in Apprentice 3 (the US version).

That was one of the final lines from Brian in the boardroom just before he got fired.

The objective was to renovate motels in New Jersey – how the one team can try accomplish this without a budget and without a timeline, i have no idea.

Lets take $20k, not work out how to spend it, and not work out when it all needs to be done. And you wonder why they lost.

Not that the other team was brilliant. But they got the guests to laugh and enjoy themselves, and that was the objective. Not to replace FOURTEEN toilets, and spend a HUGE chunk of the budget.

The other fascinating part was watching Verna from Magna crack! But it was tough sitting in the reception area welcoming guests. Working as MD for one of Trumps company’s should be pocket change after having to stay up for 48 hours making sure a handful of guests are happy! yeah right!!!!

Highly entertaining, and i learnt a few things:

1. Get the objective right before you start. It’s a cheap motel. guests are expecting trump towers. make the room comfortable, and make the guests feel special. Magna did this and that’s why they won.

2. The leader needs to get the team to work as a team – easier said than done – but Brian was extra bad at this particular role

Brian kept me laughing so much, that I actually don’t even know who the team leader from Magna was!!!

Here’s a highly entertaining summary of the episode from Reality TV World.

South Africa producers should be taking notes big time!

After a long stressful day, I met up with Belinda at Cavendish to watch the new Adam Sandler movie, as Belinda left for Joburg this morning. Lisa and her friend Nicole and I loved the movie (a comedy with a deeper message – “are you going to look back and say to yourself that you lived a meaningful life”). Belinda didn’t.

I got a HUGE box of popcorn, and went to put salt on it, and dropped the entire box on the floor. Everyone thought it was quite funny, even the lady who swept up the popcorn. And the cinema was kind enough to give me another box of popcorn on the house (well, actually they gave me more popcorn in the same box – guess margins on popcorn aren’t as high as i thought they were).

Anyway, nice one Adam Sandler. Click is funny and has soul!!

PS: before the movie, i didn’t know who Kate Beckinsale is. Click was probably made as Adam Sandler wanted to be near Kate Beckinsale for a few months!! (she plays Sandlers wife in Click). If you’re not sure who Kate Beckinsale is, go google “Kate Beckinsale” now. She’s stunning!

US Apprentice Series 3

September 28, 2006

the third series of the US apprentice tv show started this evening on South African screens.

Donald Trump is back. The apprentice music is back – you feel all motivated just having the apprentice on in the background.

the splitting of the 2 teams into “net worth” (the guys who didn’t go to college and are making 3 times as the guys who do have degrees) and “magna” was legendary – especially since the magna guys lost in the first episode.

i thought danny was entertaining but that trump would never hire him. i was certain he was going to be the first to go.

but it was todd that was voted off.

danny together with another was responsible for the marketing of a new burger king burger – and the marketing theme he came up with was shocking to say the least. playing guitar outside a burger king and letting people throw a golf ball to try go through a hole. it looked unprofessional, and didn’t fit in with burger kings professional (although i’ve seen supersize me so know what really happens)……image…(is that the right way to describe burger king?)

and he dressed like someone who wanted to just draw attention to himself.

the other thing i couldn’t believe is that while they were deciding their company name in their FIRST meeting,  he was playing guitar – it was funny, it was entertaining, but he actually disrupted the meeting, and i could see the faces of the other guys couldn’t believe what he was doing!!

very entertaining first episode.

i wanted to find out about his marketing background, so cheated and googled him and quickly found myself on the official nbc site – and the first thing that came up was the overall winner. so the suspense was short lived!

but danny seems to have success in the online world – and appears to be rather successful in the real world – what was impressive is that he studied music at MIT.

anyway, i’m not going to spoil it for the rest of you by telling you the winner – i’ll just have to keep it to myself.

Jeremy Mansfield is back with another comedian who I think might be filling in for this episode. as the MNET website says that Darryn Simpson are back as presenters – but it doesn’t seem to be Darryn.
